: The Jamiat Ulama will legally challenge Assam government's decision to convert all government-run madrasas into regular schools from the 2021-22 academic session.

The decision was taken at a four-hour meeting held at the Garigaon madrasa on Tuesday after education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma declared that the word “madrasa” will be removed from government-run madrasas along with theological courses from April 1, 2021.

The state government is set to table a bill during the winter session of the Assembly from December 28.

The Assam government has also decided to close Sanskrit tols (schools) with Sarma saying that the government has no intention of closing the private madrasas.

“We would soon introduce the necessary regulation in this regard. The state government took this decision based on research on madrasas. The government-run madrasas in Assam would either be converted into regular schools or they would be closed down. Teachers would be transferred to general schools after issuance of a government notification next month,” IANS quoted the Minister as saying.
